I know there are a few topics on this in the forums, and I read them but couldn't quite grasp all the instructions (I suck at networking lingo).

All I am trying to do is to get port 52505 open to my Windows XP VM. I'm running a Macbook, with a Linksys WRT54G router. I tried using this guide:

And while I did maintain internet access on Windows, the port was still blocked.

I've heard the differences between "shared" and "bridged" connections, but I'm not sure what those are and which is preferable. I'm sure I haven't provided all the information you guys would need (just because I'm not sure what you would need), so please don't worry about asking for some information. And thanks for any help :)

PD Shared Networking unfortunately doesn't support port forwarding yet, but you should be able to make it work in Bridged mode. To put it simply - in Bridged mode your VM gets a separate IP on the network and acts like an ordinary computer, so there shouldn't be any problems with accessing VM ports. Hmmm... Assuming that the "network adaptor link" is the icon at the bottom of the screen (next to the hard drives and other devices), then I only see shared as an option, not bridged. Is there someplace else to find it in PD?
 
It lists my airport and ethernet connections, and then "host only networking" and "shared networking"... Is bridged supposed to be in there?

I'm sure if it is supposed to be there (it doesn't appear on mine while the VM is running), but if you shut down your VM and go to the "Edit" menu and select "Virtual Machine...", you should be able to select bridged networking from the configuration editor after you select your network adapter.
 
Sorry for me being unclear.
That "default", "ethernet" and "airport" connections you see are exactly the three different types of Bridged networking, they just specify what network interface to use for the bridge.
 
Hmmm... I shut down Windows, changed it to Bridged (as described), and restarted the VM. It came up saying there was a problem ("Check that the cord is plugged into the machine", etc - it was a PD error, not a Windows). I can still access the shared folders on the Mac partition from Windows, but it won't connect to the internet. It also won't connect to the router's webpage (192.168.1.1). I tried switching from my Ethernet adaptor to my Airport, neither changes anything. Any ideas? Thanks for all the help :)

Due to some technological design limitations Bridged networking may not work if you connect to the network by Airport.
More detailed: while in Bridged wifi mode VM uses the same network MAC address as the host computer and some network routers refuse to allow two simultaneous connections from the same MAC. Review your router settings or try wired connection please.
 
I have a Linkysys WRT54G, I tried to look up if it would take two signals but couldn't find anything documenting the issue. Is there someplace or someway to check in a more organized fashion?
 
Unfortunately I cannot address the particular router configuration, please try checking with Linksys Support Team.
 
The Mac should be connected using network cable to the router and Windows VM should be either in "Default" Bridged network mode or "Ethernet".
