I installed Parallels 4 and the newest Mac OS upgrade but can't print from PC programs (all works fine on the Mac side). The Canon MX860 worked on the PC side previously. On the PC side, I downloaded the newest driver, installed the Canon software and the printer is recognized as the default printer in the Control Panel (connected as LPT1) and each of my PC programs. Yet I continuously get the message that the Printer is not responding. I tried to configure in Parallels the USB connection but it just says nothing is connected no matter how many times I plug and unplug the printer. Ideas?

Please follow the steps given below in order to resolve the printer issue:
1> Click on the Apple logo on your Mac. Select "System Preferences". Select Sharing and then enable "Printer Sharing".
2> Start the Virtual Machine.
3> Select "Parallels Desktop" written on the top of the Mac screen. Click on "Preferences". Select USB. Under USB you will see a number of devices selected. Click on the Add button. Select the Hp ColorLaserJet printer over here.
4> Now, close this window.
5> Select Devices from the menu. Click on USB and check the Hpcolorlaserjet Printer.
6> Click on the start button which is at the bottom left hand corner of the Mac screen. Go to Control Panel. Select Printer and faxes.
7> Delete all the existing Printers from this window. Now, add a new printer.
8> Try printing the test page.

In step 3, do I select connect to computer, connect to virtual machine or ask me? I selected computer and later virtual machine but neither enabled printer use
In Step 5, Devices does not list USB so I cannot click on it.
I am reluctant to delete all printers in Control Panel as my printer is already listed there. Do I still need to delete it?
Currently, Configuration shows Parallel Port 1 is enabled and connected to my printer. I unclicked the "Connected" button but that didn't change anything. Should I continue to have this Port enabled and printed?

Same exact problem with my Canon Pixma 4000! Using Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro, everything else in Windows XP works fine, I'm logged in as the administrator but I also get messages that I do not have permission to use this printer. I have followed all of the suggestions posted in this forum for fixing this issue, none work. Printing with Paralles works fine with my iMac utilizing v10.5

There is a conflict between Parallels and networked Canon printers
This thread on the Apple support forums describes a conflict between a Parallels daemon and the Canon-flavored network for printing (IJ Network; don't ask me why they don't use Bonjour). This problem appears under Snow Leopard even with the latest Parallels update.

According to the discussion, the workaround is to run the command:
sudo launchctl stop com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon
The result would be the network printing works, but then Parallels won't work. The upshot of this fix would seem to me to be that printing to a networked Canon printer wouldn't be possible from Parallels under Snow Leopard.
Do the folks at Parallels know about this problem?

To the relief, I'm sure, of the support staff at Parallels, Apple and Canon I happily report my Canon MX860 printer now works in Parallels. I can't say exactly why. It seems I took all the same steps I had tried before (make sure Mac Printer Sharing is checked, download newest Canon driver, install Bonjour for Windows, delete the current printer in Control Panel and add the printer again) but I'm sure we've all had that experience. The Parallels responses, especially the articles, proved to contain all the help that was needed. Apple support was helpful by suggesting I start at the beginning and repeat all the necessary steps one more time. That worked. As for Canon, they make a great printer but you should know that if you use Parallels and ask for help, even if it's just help deciphering the message from your printer, you will get a stock response: "Unfortunately, we can only support the MX860 on a 'native' installation of Windows XP, this can be done with 'Boot Camp', which is available from Apple." I don't even have Parallels running, and yet I can't add the printer under Snow Leopard. I am not even using wireless: the printer is connected by ethernet to my router, and so is my Mac.
Ironically, the Mac can communicate with the printer: I am able to run the Canon maintenance utility to tell the printer to clean its heads; but the Mac OS does not see the printer when I try to add it under System Preferences. I have tried doing this with the firewall off, doing it under root, and so on. According to Canon, a "More Printers" button should show up when I try to add the printer, but it doesn't. They say that if that button would show up, that I could click on it and it would then list the Canon printer by its IP address. Not sure why the button does not show up for me. This is very frustrating. Parallels should really publish something about this problem: Canon is one of the few printers that Apple sells in its stores.
