Prints strange characters

A document I create from scratch in Word 2007 prints fine.
However, any document sent to me as attachment gives problems if I print.
Mainly symbols (for example these: -, ", ',) won't print correctly.
So, the word "Bob's" will print Bob^s. The same attachment will print fine in Iwork Pages. Any help appreciated.
