Problem installing Windows XP, cd drive privileges

I'm currently installing Parallels on my new MacBook Pro laptop. While I've installed the program Parallels I'm having problems installing the Guest OS, Windows XP. I go through the steps detailed in the Quick Start Guide but encounter a problem when I reach step 6 under "Installing Windows XP." When I click on 'Devices' none of the devices are selectable, they are all greyed out. I think that the VM may not have access/privileges to the CD/DVD drive but I'm normally a Dell person so I could be wrong? Any tips or suggestions?

hmm..

I seem to remember having the same issue. (I, too, came from a dell to a MBP).

After you install the program, create a VM, make sure you set the CDROM device to "enabled" and 'connect at startup' under 'edit' on the bottom of your vm window. After that, you might need to click play to start the vm before you can link any devices to it. Let us know if that doesn't work.
 
Question, did you have the Window CD in the Drive when you set up the Guest?

When i set it up i did all the setups and then started the vm with boot set to CD/HD/Floppy and then when it squaked for the windows cd in inserted it.
 
try this

I had the same problem. My drive stayed grey under the device menu. Insert the XP disc into your drive then access the device menu. You should find that you can then select the drive.
 
Cannot install OS

I also have a grayed out choice of anything on the Parallels Desktop and the resources window. I am trying to install Windows2000Pro. I have followed the instructions in the quick guide, have the Windows CD in the drive but cannot access it. The DOS window that comes up says "no boot device available, press Enter to continue". When I do that I get the same message. Where from here? This is a new Mac Mini and I am not all that Mac literate. TIA, Al
