Problem with F8 and XP Safe Mode

My XP VM is hanging up at the login screen and I want to start it in XP safe mode. However, every time I try and hit F8 to interrupt the boot process, I fail to put it into XP safe mode. I am aware of the need to hit the FN key on my iMac along with the F8 key. I have even tried changing my keyboard default behaviour to fix it.

Any suggestions? I am running Build 6.0.12106 on 10.7.4.

What i usually did - first you need to check if any Mac hotkeys are assigned to F8 (disable it) then while booting (straight after you click Start) click inside the VM with the mouse several times (vm should grab the mouse - otherwise you will be hitting F8 inside the Mac) and hit F8 several times together with the mouse clicks. So you finally should see the screen suggesting to boot into Safe Mode. It is a little bit tricky but possible
