RC1 & Windows Update

A newbie question. I currently have RC1 installed as Win2K and did the SP4 upgrade, so it Win2K+SP4 on RC1 guest on MBP2G running OSX 10.4.6 Intel.

Hope this is the right place to ask... I have a WIN 2K SP2 full install CD, and a XP Upgrade CD. How do I upgrade, install and run it with Parallels?

If you want to set up a completely new VM running WinXP, then use the XP upgrade CD to start the install process. At some point the setup may ask you to insert a previous version of Windows install CD. That's when you can swap in the Win2k CD.

Is it better to set up a completely new VM or to upgrade the existing Win2K? I think I was asking about the letter but as long as my previous data is accessible it makes no difference to me.

The criteria are exactly the same as they would be if you had a physical Win2k machine you wanted to upgrade. Of course, before you upgrade, you can clone the VM so if you have a problem, you can just start over.
 
Here's what I would suggest:

1. Make an ISO image of the XP upgrade disc using the Image tool that Parallels includes, or Disk Utility. (If you use Disk Utility, choose the disc master option)

2. Begin a new install using the ISO image of the Windows XP upgrade disc.

3. When asked for the qualifying media, insert the physical Windows 2000 Disc and point Parallels to it. This should be all that you need it for.

You could also make an ISO image of your Windows 2000 disc, but that seems like a waste of space for what would probably be only a slight speed improvement.
 
Well, not exactly. If I was running an WIN 2K then I would just run the upgrade and reboot with out concern as to whether the emulator was set up Win2K or XP mode emulation...

Would I do the conversion, and then clone the VM and then set it up as XP ( can I change that setting on-the-fly, which is the gist of my query)?
