Reinstalling XP

My XP installation in Parallels crashed after about a year of running fine. I was unable to repair it with the set-up CD.

My question is: Can I reinstall XP from the set-up CD in the "corrupted" VM, or do I need to set-up an entirely new VM through Parallels?

Any help will be much appreciated, thanks!

too bad you did not clone your VM as a back up
i just deleted my last faulty VM and started running an older copy

always save data in shared folders
never in my documants

When you make a new VM you will get some blue boxes telling to phone microsoft
do that and tell them you had an HD failure and are still using the same computer and you will get a code to authorise your new set up

a new motherboard meant i ahd to reauthenticate my copy of windows too

then clone the new machine when completed as a back up on an external drive - or two

What exactly do you mean "clone" Is that a feature in Parallels, or can I just make a backup copy of the .hdd and .pvs files?

I do currently keep those files on a shared drive, but I still have the sneaky suspicion that accessing those files with another user account led to the downfall.

I was able to reinstall windows into the existing VM configuration, and didn't have any trouble authorizing.

Error making backup of hdd and pvs

I get an error trying to backup the .hdd file. There are no details in the error message. I have plenty of space on my external USB drive. I am not currently running the VM, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Shouldn't I be able to just copy-paste these files?
 
It was error code 1309, which I have since discovered is caused when you try to copy more than 4GB file to a FAT32 disk, which I am. I was able to split the file in Terminal to make a backup.
