RHEL5.2 - Parallels Tools lockups and mouse hang up

This problem appears to be related to Parallel Tools drivers - either mouse or video.


Mouse Driver Problems

Seems to be triggered after moving cursor from guest VM running full-screen on an external monitor, to my MacBook screen, then back again. Symptoms are mouse cursor is still alive in VM but mouse clicks are no longer accepted. Keyboard is still functional. If you are lucky and your guest had keyboard focus, you can shut-down the system using keyboard commands and not lose any work. AFter restarting the VM, it works fine.

Lock-up Problems

A more serious problem that has caused me to lose work multiple times. Seems to be triggered by screens saver activation. Possibly related to the same mouse problem but non-functioning mouse does not wake it up?

RHEL 5.2 (2.6.18.19), 16MB video memory

I have the same problem (VM no longer reacts to the mouse) very frequently under Debian 5. I can hardly work for more than 30 minutes before having to reboot because of this.

I have no solution. I do not think it is a guest OS or guest application problem as I never saw this problem under VMware Workstation with Red Hat guest VMs.

Work Around

I have found I can nearly always recover by using keyboard commands to close open applications. Alt+F then use down arrows to select Quit, or Alt+Tab to switch to a different app to try and close. Usually after closing a couple of apps the mouse regains it's ability to interact with the Red Hat 5.2 guest. No clue as to why.

I tried this but without success. I had only two open applications, which I did manage to close, but the mouse still didn't work.

But I found a solution to my problem: I switched to VirtualBox. It's slower, it lacks some of Parallels' features, but it is way more stable for running Debian at least. I can work a whole day without any problem! Bye-bye Parallels...
