Run VMs from USB HardDrive

What sort of performance can someone expect from running VMs from a USB HD? Any recommendations on type? speed? I have a Macbook with an SSD so I don't have too much space.

Don't expect too much from USB2, the speed is just too limited. A VM from Thunderbolt or USB3 runs amazingly fast though.

I've done both. USB 2 isn't THAT bad as long as you know what to expect. it's good for a test machine at the very least. Thunderbolt performance is great however.
