I've not been able to get networking working quite right with Parallels and am hoping someone can help me. Am running WinXP under Parallels 3186, but this problem predates this version. Mac OS 10.4.8 on iMac and MBP.
On my desktop iMac I have Parallels set up to use bridged ethernet, and have no issues with connectivity within Parallels. On my laptop, I have it set to shared networking, following the recommendation in the User's Guide because the laptop is in a variety of network environments. The problem is when I am at home. I have my MBP configured with fixed IP addresses on my home network (whether by Airport or ethernet), because it is convenient for me to be able to "get to" my laptop from my other machines by IP address. However, it seems that Parallels cannot resolve domain names with this configuration. I'll start up the VM, fire up Firefox and it can't go anywhere. Yet certain things WILL work. For example, tonight Windows update was able to download a pile of updates - and after it had done so - THEN Firefox seemed to be working as well.
I tried an experiment where I started up the VM and verified that I couldn't browse the internet. I shut down the VM, changed my MBP network settings from my home settings with fixed IPs to "Automatic" (which assigns IP addresses by DHCP). Now I start up the VM and can browse. Shut down VM, change my MBP network settings back to manual IP, restart VM, and no browsing.
Not being a network expert this behavior is hard for me to understand. I'd like to be able to set up Parallels networking so that it works at home and away, but so far this has eluded me.
