Sharing my osx iTunes library

I want iTunes in Windows XP pro to use the same library as on the mac (so no duplication of files) so I created a shared folder in Parallels which points to the iTunes music library on the Mac..... however when i go to select this in XP I am not able to. So I then thought that if I shared my library on the mac over the local network this would solve the issue to some degree, this works fine whilst connected via ethernet or wireless but as soon as it is unplugged there is no way of sharing - anyone got any ideas,

Doesn't iTunes for Windows require a .itl extension on the iTunes directory?
