I have a Windows Mobile Pocket PC (8525), MacBook Pro, and Parallels running XP. I want to use the Windows Mobile Internet Sharing for my Mac, this can be done easily on the OS X side with Bluetooth PAN but not with USB. The problem is that Bluetooth limits my speed to about 250-300k. I can use the Internet Sharing feature in XP with USB and no problems, my speed in the 3G areas is great. Question is, is there any way to share that XP connection back to the OS X side?

please do the following:
1. Open the virtual machine configuration (Editing the Virtual Machine Configuration) and choose the "Network Adapter 1" to the "Host-only Networking" mode.
2. Click the "Preferences" menu option in the "Parallels Desktop" menu and clear the "Enable DHCP scope for host-only networking" checkbox.
3. Browse to Applications-Utilities and open Terminal. Type the command below and press the "Enter" key:
* sudo killall -hup pvsnatd
Your administrator password is required to perform the above operation. Be careful while performin this operation.
4. Boot Windows and set up the "internet sharing" as described in the article below:

5. Open System Preferences in Mac OS X.
6. Proceed to Network Settings, renew the IP address of the Host Only connection, and disable all other connection types (please set the "network port configuration" in the Show menu and disable all other network adapters).

thanks for the info, i'm sure it should work great, but i am having a problem. when i enable ics in windows i get a conflict, because the pocket pc host uses 192.168.0.1, this wouldn't be an issue with previous windows mobile versions because they used a dun profile, but with mobile 6 it uses an "internet sharing" program that apparently utilizes the ip's that ics wants to use in xp. any ideas?

you can try to do the following:
reset the DCHP scope for host-only networking in the Network tab of Preferences menu for Parallels Desktop. Just print the ip you mentioned in the "Start" string, in the "End" string the same with 254 in the last part and look for the mask on your pocket PC.
And you can also switch to Bridged networking in case you don't have any autonomous connections on Mac's side.
And as for the Terminal command it just stops and restarts Parallels network daemon.

thanks for all the help, i didn't get a chance to try your second recommendation. i found a reg edit on the phone that forces it to use wifi instead of bluetooth pan for the "internet sharing." it was so simple i can't believe i didn't find it before. now i get the full 3g speed using the wifi connection on the mac side of the machine.

I have a complicated network environment that involves a powerbook Pro that goes back and forth from the office (gigabit wired fixed IP, Bridged), home (comcast broadband via wireless, Bridged) and mountains (Sprint PCS, PPC-6700, Host Only) with me. That means potentially a lot of back and forth with network configs but in practice your suggestion has been straightforward and easy to make work.
Build 5582, BootCamp partition, Win XPSP2, Mac OS 10.5.1
Suggestion - "manualize" this procedure.
Why do this (rather than forward sharing)? it turns out that this "tethered modem" solution works poorly on the Mac side (no USB drivers - bluetooth has some issues) but is very stable on the PC side and very fast, too. Great to be able to go both ways.

I am experiencing the loss of shared networking with 5582 and OS 10.5.1 as well, and the command "sudo killall -hup pvsnatd" works for a few starts of the VM, but then I have to use it again on every 3rd or fourth run of Vista Ultimate. Very inconvenient.... is this a bug? Is something not configured correctly in Parallels, Vista or OS X?

2. In 'Configure IPv4' choose "Off" then click 'Apply Now'.
3. In 'Configure IPv4' choose "Using DHCP" then click 'Apply Now'.
Will it solve the issue?

This issue appears to have resurfaced, and now I cannot resolve it by disabling and re-enabling DHCP for Parallel NAT... any ideas?

The instructions you referred to are to setup the VM for Host-Only networking, but I want to use Shared Networking..... is there any way to make this work more reliably? The issue of breaking shared networking keeps coming back, and I have to use "sudo killall -hup pvsnatd" to get it to work temporarily.
