Starting VM automatically & exiting app on VM shutdown woes

I made the mistake of enabling these since I only have one VM (a bootcamp XP), and didn't want to suffer through the extra clicks to get to Windows.

However, now I want to change the VM configuration...and I can't change the VM configuration while the VM is running. Since the VM starts automatically on Parallels launch, and Parallels exits automatically when the VM is shut down, it seems that I have forever lost the ability to change my VM configuration

Does anyone know of a good workaround for this?
