Stay on full screen app when using toolbox

Currently, when I activate a toolbox item, I am forced to the desktop. Which is bothersome because I then must return to my work on the fullscreen app I was using. Specifically, I record audio a lot for discussing textbooks and schoolwork for online classes, so I click record, then have to find my place in the material all the while I am recording silence.
