Stuck ?? on booting Linux

I just upgraded Debian to kernel 2.6.32-2, and now on booting, the machine gets so far, and then displays the message
Stuck ??
with 2 cores running flat out.

Any comments / suggestions / fixes?

I'm running the Debian 2.6.32-2-amd64 kernel on a single virtual CPU and a real Core 2 Duo CPU without problems. You seem to be running a real quad core CPU (27" iMac i7?) with at least 3 virtual cores dedicated to your VM. You might try reducing that to 2 or even 1 virtual core.
