After making the modifications suggested by friegh, I am still up after 4 hours. Hopefully it's not luck. The only modifications I had to make were: Shared Folders -> Both Items Unchecked Services -> Sync Time with Host machine disabled Optimization -> Adaptive Hypervisor checked Hopefully that narrows the issue down. I submitted a problem report with id 22166. So far this issue has been really easy to reproduce: 1. install parallels 4.0 under leopard 2. install ubuntu 8.04 3. Let ubuntu run for a while.
Also seeing problem I have filed bug report which I don't have since it didn't copy/paste from the window. It included a screenshot of my system log though that has little data. I'll happily assist you in debug as needed. You can find the report by looking for RT tickets filed with my registered e-mail address. -- Shawn
Same for Ubuntu 8.10 Not only Ubuntu 8.04 frozes, 8.10 reacts absolutely the same (Leopard, MacBook Pro fall 2008 with 4 GB Ram). Quite annoying, it's totally unusable.
I'm having the same problem with Ubuntu 8.04 running in Parallels 4.0 on a Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro. Submitted a report just now (#24956).
Workaround I'm sorry John, but that doesn't seem to have any affect. In fact I have never used Shared Folders in any of my VMs. Also since upgrading to 3810 my Ubuntu freezes even quicker than before. I am now lucky to get 2-3 hrs out of it.
stewarsh, Can you please try the following: 1. Wait till it hangs again. 2. Kill Parallels Desktop GUI. To do this, open Utilities->Activity Monitror, find Parallels Desktop process, click Quit button and select Force Quit. 3. Run Parallels Desktop again. Open the VM. Is it still hanged, or you can operate it again?
Tim, I'm sorry but the interface is still hung after trying this. Reloading Parallels does restore the screen to where it was but the guest does not respond to input.
Report ID I filed a bug report but do not have the ID number handy since it didn't seem to be saved anywhere any my copy/paste from the window didn't work. You may look up in your RT system using my registered e-mail address here.
I do have another odd symptom. Though the majoirty of the interface is frozen, I can still work in the frontmost app , albeit slowly. I was working in the terminal and ran a GUI app via an SSH session from remote machine. Keyboard and mouse clicks are processing approx. 5 minutes after the clock stopped updating. Also I cannot SSH into the VM from another host(using Bridged Networking).
Parallels Desktop - Help - Report a problem, after report is sent you will see window where report id is shown
Any updates: This issue has been occurring since Parallels 4 has been released for a number of users. There are a number of open threads with similar issues. Both ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 have the same problem. The only response so far is file a ticket which some of us have done. Why is is taking nearly 2 months to track down this issue? P.S. It hangs on me with the latest patches for both parallels and parallel tools.
I am beginning to agree with mojo. The "file ticket" answer in totally insufficient. The mean time to interface lock is seemingly random and can sometimes be measured in minutes or hours. IF there is no indication that a solution is coming or even being researched I will abandon parallels and look more toward Fusion.
