Ubuntu Installation Ruined? (help)

Bit poster
I had a working Ubuntu VM running but was constantly getting out of disk space when I had 11GB allocated and it was an expanding disk.

So I used the image tool and converted the expanding disk to a plain one and rebooted.

Now I cannot log into Ubuntu -- even though its the exact same user/pass as before -- it seems like it authenticates, logs in and then kicks me back to the XDM login.

Please help! I dont want to lose all my work/settings.

I am pretty sure this is because i am still out of disk space, the extra space I added using image tool appears unpartitioned
