Ubuntu-Karmic installation aborts: "can't find CDROM"

I tried today to install the release candidate of upcoming 'Karmic Koala'. Used the alternate-CD with 64-bit version 'ubuntu-9.10-rc-alternate-amd64.iso'. Host is Debian-Lenny amd64.

Debian installer (which is used in Karmic) boots up fine, but later on, when checking hardware it cannot find the CDROM. I tried both ways:

1. CD attached as an ISO-image,
2. Image burned on a CD and using real CDROM of the host (SATA drive)

Installation impossible.

Same procedure in VBox 3.0.8 on host Ubutu-Hardy amd64: all is fine, system is up and running.

Have the same issue.

Using Ubuntu 9.10 Server AMD64. Am able to get through a few screens of the install process, but am stopped when a check is performed for CDROM's. I am prompted to load additional drivers, because one could not be found.
 
Strange,

Ide cd-rom isn't found, scsi cd-rom can't be used to boot...
And if you attacht the image to 2 cd-rom drives, one ide and one scsi, it still can't find any...

Is this because ubuntu 9.10 is missing drivers, or is the parallels ide/scsi interface just an exotic taste?

fore sure not:
it installed flawlessly in VBox and is running fine including additions, seamless mode, shared folder, ...

My guess is that Parallels considers Linux-support as a by-product which ist not supported/maintained well.
 
In the meanwhile i also downloaded and installed virtualbox.
It's free and works better then parallels.

Why did i even pay for this crap? let's see that as a mistake then. ;)
 
And, consider the most annoying thing (at least for me) is that Parallels-VHD's are a one-way road with a dead end.

There is no easy way to convert their proprietary *.hdd's into another (open or well known) format. PD can just import foreign VHD's, but not export! Also mounting a *.hdd (resp. its partitions) on Linux hosts is not possible (like in VBox).

Also configuration options are the absolute minimum and it does not leave much possibilities to select emulated hardware.

update info:
I tried to install it as host on the physical machine, its running as host-system and finds the drivers for cd/dvd.
It only fails in parallels 4.
 
Just to say I'm in the same boat, and now really annoyed with Parallels 4.

I'm not upgrading to v5 as the couple of issues I've had previously have been atrociously dealt with by the support teams, and one was never solved at all (or even close to). I can't see any response from anyone from Parallels here either.

Over to another product indeed!

I've tried various combinations to work around this issue but Ubuntu just isn't having it - I'm wondering though if to keep inside the size limits, Ubuntu have dropped some support out somewhere, and it's hitting us. Why doesn't it just work like the rest of the Mac...
