Unable to login to XP at SP3 upgrade

Yesterday Windows XP updgraded to SP3 under Parallels and now I'm getting the following message when I try to log into XP.

The product key is not valid for this media type. Please use the correct installation CD to reinstall Windows. Error Code: 0x80040509.

Is there anyway to bypass this message without reinstalling the entire VM? How can I prevent this from happening again? Is it just best to shutoff the Windows automatic updates under Parallels?
 
I'm new to the forum and a potential multi-seat customer for PD5 for Mac. The fact that a basic question like this one has not been answered or even addressed after ten days gives me pause.

This question seems to be out of scope of Parallels support and should be better addressed to Microsoft.
