Uninstalling parrallels update help needed

I just recently updated my parallels desktop (through a download)... big mistake. Parallels does not work as well as the older version (not as fast, smooth and apparently some Windows configurations have been changed). I keep getting prompts to install new hardware; I try to install new tools but Windows prompts keep coming up every time I log on to windows.

I would like to uninstall the upgrade if that's possible, or uninstall Parallels and reinstall using my software on CD. If i do that, will I loose the Windows partition, or when I reinstall Parallels, will it recognize that there is an existing windows partition and can I resume using my old Windows partition? Are there special procedures on the re-install that I can follow to use the old Windows partition? I don't have the hard disk space to create another partition.

I just read Eru's post this morning, so I'm providing a little more information on my problem. This was my first post.

I am running Parallels (build 3214 which is an update I downloaded two days ago.) on a Macbook pro duo, OS 10.4.6. I am using Windows XP. Also, neither the Alt-Enter or Control-Alt commands take my out of full screen mode. I hope this little bit of extra info helps.

Hello Arturo,

You should uninstall Parallels before you install a new version.
You should reinstall it now, I think.
Please do it this way to be sure you have removed everything that should be deleted:

a. Go to Finder - Applications - Utilities - Terminal.

b. Type and run the following commands:

• sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/vmmain.kext
• sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/hypervisor.kext
• sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/Pvsvnic.kext
• sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/ConnectUSB.kext
• sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/Pvsnet.kext
• sudo rm -rf /Library/Parallels/
• sudo rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.parallels.*

Before you run these commands, please make sure that your VM hdd and pvs files are NOT stored in ~/Library/Parallels.

c. Reboot your Mac and reinstall Parallels.

You will not have to reinstall Windows and all the data on the virtual hard drive (the .hdd file) will stay intact.

VM hdd and pvs files in Library-Parallels

Currently the VM hdd and pvs files are in Library-Parallels. Should they be moved? To where?

Hello Artiuro,

You should move them to any non-Parallels folder on your Mac or to any data storage. The idea is that they should be safe for you could use them after you reinstall Parallels.

VM hdd and pvs files

So should I move the VM hdd and pvs files back to Library-Parallels after I reinstall Parallels? What are the VM hdd and pvs files by the way?

Arturo, in the last Parallels Desktop version these files are stored there by default: Mac HD/Users/<Your user name>/Documents/Parallels/<Your virtual machine folder>. You can put them in this folder when you reinstall Parallels or anywhere you wish.

tried to uninstall using terminal but need password

Teminal is asking me for a password. I tried using my computer's adminstrator's password (only one on my computer) but terminal says "command not found." I also tried using the virtiual machine's admin password but that does not work either.

What next?
 
Copy and paste the first command over, then type in your administrator password for the admin account you are currently using (you must be logged into your computer as an administrator when you do this). It shouldn't have an issue with those instructions, those are valid commands. Just make sure you aren't copying and pasting the bullet points.
 
re-installed Parallels but continue to have original problem posted

After the re-install I have the same problem described in my original post. I keep getting this pop up window:

"The version of Parallels Tools you are using in inconsistant with the currently installed version of Parallels. We recommend that you update the Parallels Tools. Select VM -> to install the correct version of Parallels tools package."

The "Found New Hardware Wizard" and other "hardware not found" windows also pop up.

I installed the new tools package but the same pop-up windows come up every time I log on to Windows.

Windows appears to run OK, though not as smooth as the previous build, and its annoying that I have to close all the pop-up windows. Is there another solution to this problem?
