Upgrade to 4.0.3846 Fails

I got a notice that an update to Parallels was available (4.0.3846). I recently upgraded to Snow Leapard. When I try to install it, it makes it as far as the installation steps dialog box. Before I can even click on "Continue", the whole dialog box disappears in an apparent crash.

Every time I launch Parallels, I get the dial that says here is a downloaded update availalble and attempting to do the upgrade results in the same thing happening.

Anyone have any ideas on what might cause this? Am am forever stuck with my current version of Parallels because of an inability to upgrade?

Please follow the steps below in regards with the issue:

1. Please uninstall Parallels using the latest 3846 build.

But remember that you need to uninstall both application and application settings while uninstalling Parallels Desktop application.

2. Then install Parallels desktop build 3846. After installing you will be prompted to create a new virtual machine. Cancel that page and go to File -> Open and choose the appropriate .pvm file in Documents/Parallels.

Also, install Parallels Tools.
 
What exactly do I lose when uninstalling the program? Do I have to reinstall Windows and all my programs, plus all the data? This seems like overkill for what should be an automatic update. I don't know that I'm prepared to do it.
 
Install Old to Upgrade?

Need clarification....
To be able to install the 3846 upgrade, you want us to uninstall our existing Parallels by downloading an old version from this link, http://download.parallels.com/deskto...846.436204.dmg
then do the upgrade to 3846? Whew!

What will happen to all my Windows XP settings and applications on XP that I've installed on XP in the past?
 
My fix that seemed to work

I ignored the upgrade available pop up when starting Parallels. I then selected check for update from the menu. When it came back and said an update was available, do I want to download, I did but put it on my desktop. After dowload, it opened up the disk image and I was able to do the upgrade successfully.

So either, the original auto download of the upgrade that was on my machine was corrupt, or Parallels updated the build (real quick without changing the build number) but whatever the reason, it now worked.

Not sure this will work with the rest that replied to this post.
 
Install on Desktop worked for me as well

Changing the destination from the Parallels folder to the desktop and then running the install from the desktop worked great! Must be some issue with the destination...all upgraded to .3086!
 
Hello,

Please make sure that after you have upgraded your copy of Parallels after changing the location, you put it back in the same folder or you might face problems with updates.
 
Afraid to do the upgrade after last night's adventure!

After 5 frustrating hours last night trying to get Vista Ultimate to run, I uninstalled Parallels 4.0 which had the latest build. It was running so smoothly before going upgrading to SL. I had error messages such as no ethernet controller device and please insert disk that came with network adapter card, Parallel Tools suddenly disappeared too, and I was left with constantly having to hit ctrl-alt to get the jerking mouse under control. Couldn't reinstall the Parallel Tools because I kept getting the Windows Unsigned Driver message and although I kept hitting to "Install Anyways", it wouldn't. I was left in the infinite restarting loop. And so I started over, uninstalling Parallels completely, and then I tried to reinstall. No dice. It would fail. I also had the latest .dmg update downloaded to the desktop but each time I had tried to upgrade it disappeared into space and crashed. I tried to delete the file and I couldn't, even with Trash It.

So, I decided to reinstall using my original 4.0 disk, did not try to upgrade as it suggested, and installed the original version. And voila! It worked again. I was able to install Parallel Tools even though that annoying Windows Unsigned Driver message kept appearing. I hit the Install Anyways about 8 times until it was successfully installed. Then I had my ethernet connection back and all is back working.

By the way, I even tried to run a command that would install unsigned drivers in Vista. It installed successfully but failed to bypass the Unsigned Driver message in Parallels.

I am so afraid to update to the latest version after last night since my theory stands, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Do you foresee any problems if I do not upgrade since all seems fine now. I only need Windows to run Quickbooks for my business since the Mac version is not good for me.

Sorry for the long post but I had to vent!
