Upgraded to Parallels 4 now Boot Camp has the hal.dll problem

Hi Guys,

Well I upgraded to PD4 today (against my better judgement) and it wanted to upgrade my Boot Camp installation of XP Pro SP3, so I followed through to the point where it wanted me to manually finish the upgrade and I am now getting the following error:

I have tried running through this KB article: http://kb.parallels.com/en/4867

but I am getting the following error:

Can anyone offer any assistance please as this has really bolloxed my Windows installation and I need to use certain Windows apps during my working day.

I'm actually going through the exact same problem right now. Replacing the hal.dll file doesn't fix the problem because your boot.ini is pointing to the wrong location.

In parallels 3 it automatically chose the "Parallels Configuration" choice in boot.ini. My theory is that in Parallels 4 it simply chooses the default option, which is apparently wrong.

Steps to fix:
1) Choose one of the following: (I would recommend VMWare Fusion trial as you will spend the least amount of time installing/uninstalling and it'll be easier/quicker to debug)
a) Remove Parallels 4, install Parallels 3: http://www.parallels.com/download/file/v3/en/GA/Parallels-Desktop-5626-Mac-en.dmg. You have to do this b/c you are not able to boot from a CD w/in Parallels 4 when it's stuck on the upgrade screen - at least I don't know how.
b) Install VMWare Fusion trial
2) Boot from your XP CD and enter the recovery console... Follow this guide to rebuild your boot.ini: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184
3) Now try to boot using Parallels 4. If this STILL doesn't work, change your boot.ini to the following: (Note: YOU WILL NEED TO REPLACE X WITH YOUR WINDOWS PARTITION - it is generally a number from 1-3, mine was 3)
