USB devices - DOS

I have a USB flash drive. Parallels recognises it, does a Win System Backup(Restore) then installs the device. Each time it comes up with the New Devices Wizard. After a supposed successful install, the device is recognised, but does not operate.

Q1: why does the system have to come up each time to do a new device install.
Q2: why wont the jolly thing work

Your subject makes this seem ambiguous. DOS knows nothing of USB, but Windohs has the New Devices Wizard. I'll assume your using Windwoes. Also you don't say what is host OS, and what is guest OS. I'll assume your using OSX as host and XP as guest.

USB is problematic. Try sharing as a network device.

As Constant said, USB is a shaky issue in Parallels. Supposedly the new device install comes up because the USB adapter seen by WinXP is a virtual device driver from Parallels that provides access to the hardware managed by the host OS. A small glitch in the driver may obscure the identity of the connected USB device. Secondly, it could well be the USB drive itself which is not completely well-designed. At our lab, we have a USB color calibration device from Minolta that is re-installed by the the new device install of a native WinXP every time it is connected.
