usb drive won't connect

I have parallels desktop for mac v3, build 5624.
I'm having difficulty getting the guest OS to recognize my USB thumb drive.
Both guests, windows and linux, have the same issue. I plug in the USB drive and it asks if I want to connect it to the guest. I click 'yes' but the drive never shows up. I can go to the parallels "devices" menu and see it listed there but it's never in the guest OS.

What am I doing wrong?

Please uninstall and reinstall Parallels tools By follwing the below steps :

1) On the windows side go to Control Panel => Click on Security Center and turn off Windows Firewall and also Anti virus.

2) Please disable the Parallel Internet Security (Kaspersky).

3) Go to Control Panel => Go to Add or remove Programs => Remove Parallel tools completely.

4) After the Parallel tools are removed then launch Parallels Desktop, on the Menu bar click on "ACTIONS"

5) Click on install Parallel tools => Click on Continue and proceed with the installation.

6) Kindly keep a check if you get the confirmation message that " Parallel tools are successfully installed."

7) Restart the Windows Operating System and the Mac.
 
I'm working primarily, at this point, in linux. I abandoned my windows machine, though it was having this same problem. When I install parallels tools on linux it never gives me a confirmation message and it, later, still says "install parallels tools" under the actions menu. However, parallels tools are installed at some level because I can move my mouse freely out of the guest OS and the screen automatically resizes.
I've read that there's no support for folder sharing though..and I presume that will be a problem.
 
So judging by the feedback I'm guessing nobody has a clue on this one?

Is there any way to rig this to share folders between linux (guest) and mac (host)?

I have been struggling for months to get Parallels to recognize my GPS (US) and printers, in Windows XP. Sometimes if I run the "New Hardware Wizard" it will recognize the device but it's kind of hit or miss. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Parallels Tools a zillion times, I have downloaded something called Bonjour on the recommendation of Tech Support, and whatever it is supposed to do, it doesn't. I have played with every setting as advised by tech support, no rhyme or reason, nothing helps.
I even paid for the ridiculous high priced tech support and spent 4 hours! on the phone. And I still cannot get my printer to work with any regularity with Parallels.
Since I am using windows to run maptech software and don't have a mac application to open the files, I can't just open the files on the mac side and print them from there.
I may have to look for a cheap used windows machine to run MapTech, less hassle.
