USB to serial connections - programming a ham radio

Does anyone have any experience connecting to a Kenwood ham radio through Parallels with a serial to USB cable?

Well years ago I wrote a windows based Kenwood control program that worked over serial. I've never tried to talk to anything USB yet.

Kenwood makes a program suitable for programming the radio - but it's windows only and requires a serial port.
I was wondering if a USB to serial cable running under Parallels would just work.
