If I open an XLS file though Excel, everything is wonderful. However, if I close Excel & double click the (same) XLS file icon, it (I guess Parallels) informs me that the application "Microsoft Excel" cannot be opened because PowerPC applications are not longer supported. My computer is an Intel Core i7 running OSX Version 10.8.5. Parallels 8 worked well with the same operating system....
