Vista USB 2.0 hard drives do not work

    Hi,

I am trying to mount an NTFS formatted USB 2.0 external drive without success. The drive mounts and can be read in Mac OS 10.4.10. It can be read and written on an XP portable and and separate Vista portable. I can read and write to a USB fob that mounts without problem on the same setup. Parallels Desktop sees the USB hard drive and shows the "USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge" in the USB devices drop down menu at the bottom of its window. When I select it, Windows Vista Business tries to install device driver software. Windows cannot find a device driver for "USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge" after looking both on the hard drive and internet.

I tried removing USB support in Parallels, booting the Vista VM, turning off USB devices in the Vista device manager, rebooting the Vista VM, shutting down Vista, then turning on USB support in Parallels and starting Vista. There is no change in behavior. Windows still cannot find a driver for the USB hard drive. Other USB devices work.

When I go to the Windows device manager under "Other devices" USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge is shown with a yellow warning !. Port_#001.Hub_#002, Device is not configured properly Code 1.

Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller shows two installed. Both working correctly.

Macbook Pro, Mac OS 10.4.10, all updates installed.
1 Gig Windows Vista Business VM. All updates installed.
Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac Build 5160.

I need to mount the drive directly because I want to read and write to a 120 gig file on the drive. Mounting it on the Mac OS and access through networking works to read the drive, but does not allow writing to the NTFS formatted dive.

Everything I read on the site makes it sound like USB 2.0 hard drives should be able to be mounted by Vista directly. Does anyone have any ideas?

An update, I received the following from Parallels tech support,

    "Hello Richard,
Unfortunatly there is some difficulty with this device's
implementation in Parallels. Our developers will work hard to improve
that and it should be fixed in our future updates.
