What is a "beta update"

I'm confused about this.

I purchased Parallels about 8 weeks ago and am currently running Build 1848. If I ask Parallels to look for updates, it says my copy is up-to-date. Then I get this notice about a new "Beta Update" available.


So what, exactly, is a "Beta Update"?
