Where does video memory come from?

Can anyone tell me if the video memory allocation for a virtual machine is taken from the Hosts system ram or from the Hosts video ram? So for example, say I have an IMAC with 4GB ram and 256 MB VRAM. I allocate 128 MB to a virtual machines video memory and 1GB to the virtual machines memory. Does that mean the Mac OS has only 128MB of video memory and 3GB of system memory left for itself to use?

I'm looking at the new IMACS and am wondering how important the macs (Host) video memory is if I am going run virtual machines.

Does Parallels grab the virtual machine video memory from the host VRAM or the Host system memory? (Parallels has a separate setting for virtual machine video memory)

How much VRAM does a host need to run virtual machines?
 
There are no specific requirements for video RAM of a Host OS.

So, all you need is to have enough RAM on the Mac in order for Parallels application and virtual machine to run properly.
