using Parallels Desktop on a MacBook Pro with Windows XP as guest OP I wonder where the INS key is (to toggle between insert and overwrite in some apps).

That is an interesting one. I have no idea, but looks like you won't be using that key for much longer...

But I need that INS key...
On my MacBook, I also need the INS key for software I use. I asked and looked everywhere to no avail and eventually stumbled on the key combination.
It's Alt+0, but the zero on the overlaid keypad, so you need to add the Apple "fn" key to get it to work. So the final key-combo is fn+alt+0 (on the overlaid keypad)

tried it again. Fn-M works fn-alt-n just beeps.

My wife just messaged me, wanting to know how to toggle on her "insert" function as she had accidentally toggled it off, so it was deleting everything in front of the cursor as she typed.
Thanks to this forum, I was able to have her try "Alt" "0", with the "0" being the one on her actual number keypad. She was ecstatic after suffering thru a temporary insert function nightmare. Now she has the solution.

On my MB Pro, I found the fn+alt+M combo unreliable for an insert key. Sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. I have no idea why.
For me, the solution was to download the Win2003 resource kit, and run remapkeys.exe. I had already checked "Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features" in Mac Keyboard and Mouse settings, and changed F9-F12 in Dashboard and Expose to use Option F9-F12, so in Windows, I mapped F12 to Insert, and have had no more trouble with it.
