I noticed many of the supported guest operating systems were several years old. I use Debian on my desktop and purchased Parallels so I could develop code on my Mac through Linux. Debian 4 is the latest supported version but even Debian 5 (the latest stable Debian version) does not contain the most recent compilers and automake tools that I need. Debian 5 installed fine on Parallels, but when I tried to dist-upgrade to the "Debian testing distribution" Parallels crashed when the package manager tried to such off power managment for upgrading. After that the VM no longer booted and will have to be deleted.

Here is my question: what distribution of Linux can I use that will give me recent automake and compiler tools (released within the last year) and will still work with Parallels. It is also important to me that these tools are managed by the package manager and hand tinkering is not required. I am using OSX10.4 on a MacBook.

    Thank you for your time.
