Why is installation from IMG or ISO not straightforward?

    Device: Apple Macbook Pro (M1 Max)
    Host OS: MacOS Monterey


    When selecting an IMG or ISO (primarily Linux distros) from which to install an operating system, I'm warned that an OS can't be found inside the IMG/ISO. When I attempt to boot, it simply gets stuck in EFI/BIOS. I'm sure there's something obvious I'm missing, but I have no idea what it is. Please advise (and perhaps fix).
