windows 8 vm becomes corrupted after reclaiming space

Hi, twice now I have reclaimed space and afterwards found that the vm won't start and by all indications it seems to be corrupted. Any suggestions? I am dead in the water and the email support folks at Parallels have not responded to my request for help.
 
I've just had the same happen on a windows 7 VM.
I read another post suggestion the tips at: http://kb.parallels.com/en/9165 helped them.

I started trying the 'split disk into 2gb' option to see if that would fix it but I didn't have time to wait so I restored a backup from a couple of days ago
