Windows applications running on OSX desktop - possible?

Something I'd really like to see one of these days and just wondering if it's technically possible:

I'd like to be able to actually view and use Windows applications on the OSX desktop. In effect, rather than switching to a 'virtual OS environment' I'd like to see the individual applications running in separate windows just as any other OSX application. I'm thinking of a Citrix-like implementation where the presentation is managed by OSX.

Any thoughts anyone? Could this eventually be achieved with Parallels or is it a different product altogether?

Cheers,

Tom

Yeah, it would have really been nice if Microsoft had used X11 instead of rolling their own :-)
