Windows low on disk space

WIndows continually reports that is low on disk space (31.2gb drive C has 82.5mb of space!).

Checked using Chkdsk and this reports the same.

However on using the utitlity ifindspace, tells me I have only 4.6gb of files!

When I browse each individual folder, there are none that are bigger than 1.67gb and I have made sure Windows is displaying all system and hidden files.

When I use Windows search facility to find large files, the largest it finds is around 320mb.

It appears that Windows itself is not recognising that files have been deleted. (and yes I have emptied the recycle bin!)

I don't want to expand my virtual drive - I just want to know why it thinks there are more files there than there really are!
 
Windws reports disk full

I don't have a problem with the size of the image file on the host OS - its 31966 Mb and I have plenty of space on my Mac hard drive so I don't need to change it. The problem arises when I start the VM - Windows XP reports it is low on disk space.

Here are the stats:

Chkdsk reports:

3275603 KB total disk space
32113892 KB in 133493 files
363548 KB available on disk

ifindspace reports

4.46Gb in 25674 files

The issue is that Windows thinks there are 133493 files, but there are only 25674 files actually in use and visible!

How can I tell Windows to get rid of approx 107000 files that aren't being used?

And how can I stop Windows creating them again?

PS Using Parallels 3.0 build 5608.
