Windows Vista Upgrade to Win 2000 VM

I stupidly bought a Windows Vista Basic UPGRADE on a CompUSA store closing. The salesperson told me that it would look for a valid install of Win2000 or ask for the CD. Not so. It will only upgrade an installed copy of Win 2000. I have a full retail version of Win 2000 with COA but I cannot upgrade the Windows 2000 installation. It fails the compatibility test when I try to upgrade it. Is there anything I can do? I was able to get it to install by NOT entering the key, but it will time out (stop working) after 30 days. I only use it occasionally, and if necessary I can reinstall it every 30 days. Not the best solution, but I do not intend on throwing good money after bad to buy a full license, when I feel that I have tried to fulfill the requirements by owning a full version of Windows 2000. Just another reason why I moved to Mac! Thanks for any help.

how exactly did you perform the upgrade?

Please, try to do it in the following way:
at first, backup your VM folder (нру one that contains .hdd and .pvs files), just in case.
Then, install the CD, open your Windows XP virtual machine Configuration Editor (open Parallels Desktop, do not start the VM).
After that, choose the "Prepare Windows Vista Upgrade..." option from the Actions menu. After the required preparations the virtual machine will be started automatically.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows Vista Upgrade.
