Windows XP is stuck in Shuttling Down mode. Not sure how to solve it.

could you please tell me what version of Mac OS and what build of Parallels are you using?
Also please tell me if you use a Boot Camp.

I'm using leapord with parallels build 5160.. however it appears to be working... don't how or why, but i tried starting it up again it worked perfectly. hopefully this shall continue.
 
Win XP will not stop shutting down

We are more than three years later and I just had this problem.
Using MacBook Pro 2010, Core I7, 2.66 Ghz, 8 GB ram, Mac OS X.6.6
with Parallels Build 6.0.1194 Rev 637263
with Win XP SP3, 2GB ram for virtual machine.

I have been using this setup for a long time with no problems, but last night when I tried to shut down Windows, it went to the blue shut down screen and stayed there. Left if over night, but no change. Tried to Stop VM, but could not - it went to blackish Win XP shutting down screen. Tried to close Parallels, but could not. Used Force Quit to shut down Parallels. When I restarted Parallels and the Win XP virtual machine, it opened to the Win XP black shutting down screen. When I try to Stop VM I get, "Unable to complete the operation.

This operation cannot be completed because the virtual machine "WinXP1" is in the "stopping" state."

I can now close Parallels using Quit, but when I restart, and restart virtual machine, I get to the same shutting down screen.

How can I do a hard shutdown of Win XP? My Mac keyboard does not have a Delete key to try a Control+Alt+Delete.

What can I do?
 
Problem resolved.

For whatever reason, Quitting Parallels would not correct the problem. However, I finally shutdown and restarted my Mac and that did the job. Seems like that was the only way to do a hard shutdown of Windows. It was not my first thought as I rarely turn it off. It does sound like a bug in Parallels in any case. Good luck.
 
Thanks for the reply. That's what I did as well. It does sound like a glitch. Maybe Parallels would be willing to look into it. I thought about getting tech help from them but didn't want to pay for it if it is a software glitch. Would somebody from Parallels be willing to weigh in on this?
 
Can't shutdown windows

Same issue. I haven't got as far as shutting down Mac yet but windows is unresponsive to any keystrokes. Can Parallels respond?
 
Rather than shut down your Mac, why not try a Force Quit of Parallels from within OS X (look under the Apple icon)?
 
Windows Is Shutting Down

I got out of this problem by going to "Virtual Machine" and clicking on "Reset" in the pull down menu.
 
Resolved - Without rebooting Mac

I just got this same issue, and could not afford restarting my Mac because I had another application running a long process, yet I really needed to access my Windows XP VM which remained 'hanged' in stopping state. I solved it this way, without having to reboot my Mac :

1- launched Terminal
2- ps aux (to get your list of active processes, in order to ease your life, quit as many applications as you can afford before running 'ps aux' to list your active processes)
3- identify the processes related to Parallels in your list, and jot down their PID
4- sudo kill -9 [PID] for each Parallels process (do this at your own risk, I am not responsible for anything bad that could happen if you kill the wrong process)
5- sudo launchctl stop com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon (to stop your Parallels service)
6- sudo launchctl start com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon (to start your Parallels service)
7- sudo launchctl list | grep com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon (to check if service restarted properly)
(your Parallels process is running if it shows any other PID than 0. mine did not the first time I grepped it, so I ran steps 5 and 6 one more time, then it worked)
8- launch Parallels again, see what happens, at that point it brought me back to my list of virtual machines and Windows XP started perfectly without being hanged.

These are the steps I went through, but I found about steps 5-7 just AFTER I had gone through 2-4. If it happened to me again, I would try steps 5-7 in the first place without doing 2-4 to see if it works. It would thus avoid killing processes in blind fashion. Maybe you can try this and document what you find in here ?
