WinXP install failure under Parallels (3180)

I have not been able to install Windows XP Home under Parallels. I bought both products today, installed Parallels and used its updater to download and install Build 3180. Windows XP will not install.

Using the OS Installation Assistant, I get to the final step, where it says to insert the Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive. I click "Finish" and an error message pops up saying that the drive isn't ready or the installation disk hasn't been inserted (it has). After 15-20 seconds, my MacBook's SuperDrive spits out the Windows installation CD.

Oh, the one time I got the Windows installation process underway, the installation quit, giving me the following error message: "File symc8xx.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue." This was followed by "Setup failed. Press any key to restart your computer."

I hope someone out there can help!

Have you been able to read all the files off the CD without problems? Also, was there a build 3180? I know 3170, 3186, and 3188 had been out, but that one's unfamiliar.
 
Sorry, my bad... the update I downloaded was/is in fact 3188.

Read all the files off of which CD, the WinXP one? No, I don't think so.
 
Well, I'm saying that if you do some simple copying of files off the entire CD to a folder and you encounter a problem, then your optical drive may not be working with the CD properly. One idea I can think of in this case is to attempt making a disk image out of your CD somewhere, and work with THAT instead of the physical version.
 
I just tried using the Parallels Image Tool to make an image of the Windows installation CD, but my MacBook's drive spit out the disk before the Image Tool could do its thing.

Maybe I'll just go the Bootcamp route, and forget Parallels. Waste of $80...
 
You better buy another Windows disk or repair your MacBook's drive. Parallels or Image Tool doesn't eject disks itself. If you think that is parallels troubles use dd command to create disk image.
 
I just copied an audio CD into iTunes, so I'm guessing it's not the drive. Perhaps a trip to Staples to exchange the Windows disk might be in order.
 
make the cd image using disk utility (make sure the type is set to cd/dvd master in the disk utility option)

then use that image to install
 
An update...

I used my old IBM PC to make a copy of the new WinXP Home disk, and was able to use the copy to install WinXP successfully on my MacBook.
