Well, good news on one USB front. We're able to get a Canon iP4000 working with BootCamp, OS X, and through an XP'd Parallels. We can also get it working through BootCamp and Parallels but NOT OS X through a wireless USB print server. This is partly due to that there is no driver for it under OS X because Canon wants folks to buy the iP4000R with builtin wireless, though we were able to do a fake out on the PowerPC that does not seem to be working under Intel OS X yet. Anyway, in an odd role reversal we can at least do the printint to it wirelessly through Parallels using shared folder!

(If anybody has gotten an iP4000 going wirelessly through a print server with OS X, would appreciate a pointer.)

I'm still researching a Macbook Pro, but I cam across this site while researching printing to large format plotters. Since what your problem seems to be is a driver issue have you tried http://www.printfab.net/ It might fix your problem.
 
I took a look at Printfab. Oddly, while perusing its manual I decided to try all the printing disciplines again and it turned out that we needed to use LPD, the Line Printer Daemon, for use with Tiger (we used a different driver fake-out which for now seem ok).

As a side issue, I have no idea why the protocol does not show up in the Printer Setup Utility or the printer status queue window, or the Print & Fax window of System Preferences, or last but no least the Printer Info page.

Anyway, this is the frosting on the cake, and once again Parallels uses the Canon supplied driver right to the print server for when we need that.

I too have an Canon iP4000 printer that just won't go except in the generic/postscript mode.

Needless to say, this is unsatifactory as I can't control the printer, e.g. envelopes, high quality glossy print, greyscale etc.

Tried loading driver with Bonjour, from the hard drive and "Have disk" source, still no go.

If you could tell us how you managed to install it, I and many others would be grateful.

If I recall, we I put it into generic mode under OSX wireless, the print server accepted it, and then just tossed it. I had to make it LPD and a BJC 7000.

Note1: I had though I had done that earlier and it failed, but it may be that I did not actually do so.

Note2: You can get it printing when directly connecting the iP4000 to the MBP Pro under OS X right?

Note 3: Which OS are you having the problem with? And which have you gotten it working with?

Note 4: Our Belkin Print Server comes with a tool which automatically detects the print server and printer and creates a virtual printer port or whatever it is called. This is for Windows only. And after installing the iP4000 by directly connecting it. I have in the past done this by hand for some machines, though I forget how. I could probably try to look to see how to recreate it by hand. Anyway, I'm unclear if you're trying to get it working wirelessly or having problems trying to get it directly connected?
 
Also, just in case there is no confusion: Although we can print wirelessly to the iP4000 it's only stuff like web page "dumps", printing from Word, etc. There is no settings in the BJC drivers for things like photo printing to glossy paper, etc. To date we've only done such printing via Windows, and since we can still do it via Parallels, there is at least a way with shared folders. I am not aware of a straight OS X driver that supports allowing user-settable options.

I can print from OS X. Installed latest driver from Canon Web site. Have full controls, as described in the Canon iP4000 manual, in TextEdit but curiously there are only three options for paper in Preview.

I do not have other OS X applications yet as the programs from the old iMac FP are for OS 9.2 so I don't know if all others will work properly.

Under Parallels I am running Win 2000 only and have tried every possible way to install the iP4000 driver, directly or using Bonjour but no go except Generic/Postscript.

I am operating with direct connection to printer.
 
I've never installed it under 2000, but I would suggest uninstalling it, rebooting, then installing it from CD first w/o plugging in the printer, rebooting, then plugging in the printer.

Unfortunately, still no go.

I guess I'll have to wait for the Desktop update, soon I hope.

BTW, I see Desktop for the Mac in the stores now.
 
It might be a 2000 issue, though I don't see how.

Yes, we saw it in the new Manhattan Apple Store on Friday. It was given no significance at all there, dunno if that's a pro or con.
