word docs won't open, Oxford program won't boot

Hi,
I'm new to the forum but decided to take the plunge and register after I found the solution to my Parallels installation problem. Was a HUGE help!

So now I have 2 problems, probably stemming from my lack of knowledge about PCs and my overzealousness when trying to troubleshoot on my own.

1) I'm not sure how I managed to do it, but Word documents have somehow decided to open in Parallels rather than Mac OS. When I click on a .doc file in Mac os, it automatically opens the file with WordPad in Parallels. I have no idea how to fix it and don't want this to happen. Help!

2) I recenlty installed a new program on Parallels: the Oxford Spanish Dictionary. I have installed multiple other programs with no problems, however when I click on the Oxford icon, it doesn't open. I get the little hourclass icon, which then disappears and then nothing. I tried uninstaling and reinstalling to no avail. Please help!!!

this is well known issue of 3.0. You can read about it for example here:

Main point is that Parallels will fix it with adding configuration option that let to switch off smart select feature.

I have a very few assumptions about this issue: something wrong with this application i guess. Couldn't you to post link where i'll can download it and try to install? And one more question: what version of Windows guest OS are you using?

Thanks for your help, first issue is solved! The application I'm trying to run is the Oxford Spanish Dictionary, Windows Version 2.0. It's from a cd rom and not something you can download and install. I'm running Windows XP Home edition on my VM. Any ideas?? Thanks!
 
also, don't know if this helps, but I was running this same dictionary program on Windows 2000 Professional and it worked just fine. So why doesn't Parallels like it?

well if at Parallels you've installed Win2kPro too then assumption that it's Parallels issue would be rather correct. Can you see some requirements list on your software installation CD or system compatibilities?
 
sorry I didn't specify, what I meant to say was that on my old laptop I had virtual pc running Windows 2000 Professional and the Oxford dictionary installed and ran fine on that. I am running Windows XP Home on my current laptop, with Parallels.
 
sorry but this specification doesn't change nothing ;). If you've checked your software on Win2kPro that was installed into Parallels and it wan't working there and working under Virtual PC at the same time then it would be a point. But nevertheless with some exceptions: it's very difficult to get two absolutely equals guest OS images. Just if you installing all from the same distributives.

So what about system requirements for your Oxford software? Whether they presents?
