VMWare has an open source X display driver written and disted in just about all linux / unix including Solaris .... perhaps the best way to tackle the display issues in these guest OSs would be to write something similar and have it released ? I believe the VMWare one is simply a modified VESA driver. This would greatly simplify UNIX installs.....
