xp Install screwed up?

When i installed xp everything seemed fine. the os launches but then it gets weird.
The os boots in classic view no xp extras but not safe mode? Internet explorer does not launch instead i get the what do you want to open this file with prompt?
There are programs missing from the star menu like calculator? Whats going on? Did I miss a step or something? Please let me know.
 
fixed.

I deleted the original VM and re-installed. Not sure what was different but it worked perfectly. Thanks for the help.
