XP stuck in "preparing to upgrade your virtual machine" loop

Bit poster
I have an XP vm been working fine for years, then upgraded to 7 and was still fine, been working for a few days now then this morning I get "preparing to upgrade your virtual machine" and then it launches back to the Press Start screen.

Other VM's are fine. I loaded the c drive in another vm and it looks ok.

Any more ideas ?

Thanks

Update

If I remove the "d" drive it boots fine.

If I mount the "d" drive in os x it looks fine.

If I add the drive to another xp os I get back to the upgrade

If I add the drive to a win 7 I get the upgrade but IT BOOTS :)

Added it back to the original xp and it boots just fine now.

Off to make some backups :)

Not fixed

Well maybe spoke to soon. Back to the loop again.

In the end I created a new disk and copied the files from one to the other. Odd as in 7 it is fine.

Still now working

Spoke to soon, not working again. Only way to fix was to create a new disk and copy the files over to get it working in XP although works fine in Windows 7.

Even backup disks not used in 7 won't open in XP
