I've been searching the forums but haven't seen anything really concrete about this question. Before I go the last mile and get Parallels and/or Boot Camp up and running, I wanted to know if there is any difference in performance between running Windows from a Parallels Disk Image, or from a Boot Camp install. I'd also like to know if there are any disadvantages to running from the Boot Camp partition. Are there any Parallels features that aren't supported if you do? And does having the Boot Camp software from Apple installed cause any problems while booting in Parallels(and vice versa, does having Parallels Tools installed cause any problems when booting to native Boot Camp?)? Thanks in advance.
Boot Camp usage is the same as using the real computer, performance of course will be higher than in Virtual machine. But in Parallels Desktop you have access to mac and Windows in the same time
Of course that's all true. But I don't think you understood my question. Let me use an example. Lets say I have a virtual machine set up, Windows XP. Let's also say I have boot camp installed, with an identical copy of Windows XP What I want to know is, will there be a difference in performance between using the virtual machine in Parallels or using the boot camp partition in Parallels?
No, there will be no difference, advantages of Boot Camp are, that you can run applications or games which are still in process of getting support to run in VM (3d, direct access to Virtualization features -for example to install Parallels Workstation for Windows)
Excellent, then if there is no disadvantage, I see no reason to use a virtual machine. With Boot Camp I'll have both choices available at any time.
