No more real or virtual CD/DVD-ROM

Hi,
a couple of days ago I lost the ability to mount real (and virtual) CD-ROMs in all my Windows installations (2 Win XP, 2 Vista). I'm using Mac OS 10.5.6, Parallels Desktop 4.0.3810 (German), an older MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo with 2 GB RAM and a Matshita DVD-R UJ-857.
I configure Parallels to use the real DVD drive in Windows; on inserting a CD-ROM, the CD spins up, but never appears on the Windows desktop. Removing the CD via the Devices menu works - the CD then shows up on the Mac desktop. (When I configure Parallels to use an .iso file instead of the real drive, the .iso file also never appears on the Windows desktop.)
In the Windows Device Manager, the DVD-ROM drive appears correctly named, but with a yellow exclamation mark (Code 39). Uninstalling and reinstalling the device did not help, and trying to update the driver did not find any updates.
I also tried different IDE numbers in the Parallels configuration window.
I rarely use CD-ROMs, but right now an installed program wants to see the original CD-ROM.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Kwm,

Perform this when the Windows Virtual Machine is shut down.

Go to Configure => Select the Smartmount => enable the option.

If it is already enabled then kindly uncheck the option and recheck the option so that it is enabled.

This should fix the issue.

thank you for your help. I had indeed deactivated SmartMount to avoid mounting my external SATA drives which contain Time Machine and other backups.
After activating SmartMount, the following happens:
- when the DVD drive is connected to the Windows guest, an inserted CD-ROM does NOT show up.
- if I then disconnect the drive from Windows, the CD-ROM shows up BOTH in Mac OS and Windows!
This is not the way it used to be, but if it is a feature, I can get used to it.

Real CD needed, though

Hi,
just noticed that the above solution mounts the CD-ROM as a network drive. However, my program wants to see the real CD-ROM (to confirm ownership, I suppose). Is there any way to accomplish that?

1) Try reinstalling Parallels Tools: Virtual Machine -> Reinstall Parallels Tools.
2) Try removing the CD drive in Virtual Machine -> Configure... while having the VM stopped, then start the VM.

I am haveing a similar problem with CD-DVD running Win XP I can see the drive in My Computer but it does nothing when I put the disk in to install the drivers for the camers it spins then stops.The i-site camera on my mac-book pro also does not work in the VM.I purchased the logitech camera to install in the VM Should I be able to switch between both?

CD-DVD Not working I am trying to install a Logitech Quick CamV11.1 Camera I get this message
"Windows can not read from this disk.The disk mite be corrupted or it could be useing a format that is not compatible with windows"
Question #1 Is it possible to install the web cam.

Question #2 How do I get the CD-Dvd Drive to work again? I do see it in my computer but it does nothing.Please give detailed fix step by step.

1. Right Click on My Computer and choose Manage.
2. Go to Device Manager -> Choose the USB device.
3. Right Click on the device and choose update drivers.
4. You can update the drivers from the CD or from the internet.

Also for CD/DVD drive

Go to Devices on the top MAC menu bar
Then choose CD/DVD
Choose Real CD/DVD

Is the disc readable on any other computer? If yes, then try making an image of it and connecting it to the virtual machine via Devices -> CD/DVD -> Connect image...
 
Thanks I got it working.Not sure what did it .My virtual machine freezes up and I have to shut it down & reboot.Some time even shutting off the MacBookPro power switch cause every thing else is dead.Is this normal?? well I got the camera working.TKS
 
I had the same problem in my Win XP virtual machine after upgrading from Parallels 3 to Parallels 4. The #3 step resolved my issue right away.

Would you please explain what this means and write out some steps on how to do this? I am having the same CD-Rom issues as the above posters and none of the above resolutions have worked for me. I'm getting frustrated and maybe this will work...if I only knew what it meant.
 
None of the suggestions on the parallels site worked to resolve the problem I was having after updating to Parallels 6.0.1194 which was that the Virtual (or real) CD was reporting code 41, hardware could not be found. The procedure I used was generally described here (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080808141039AABJ2W9) and basically consists of finding the particular HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry entry that

(a) says "CDROM / DVD" or the like
(b) has upper and/or lower filter key entries

and remove the filter entries (leave the rest of the registry items alone). Then, uninstall the drive in the hardware manager in windows, and then rescan for hardware. Reboots between each step were not required for me. Having an image mounted or the real cd-drive connected (i.e., in parallels menu) was also not required.
