After researching everywhere, there is no solution for this error. I updated my MacBook to Snow Leopard and updated Parallels to 4.0. I used Windows Vista two times. The next time I launched, I got the error:

Unable to connect to Parallels Service.

Make sure that prl_disp_service is running or check your firewall settings. If the problem persists, contact the Parallels support team for assistance.

After two $29 support tickets that were mysteriously "closed" without me speaking to a single person, 5 phone calls that told me to wait 35 minutes, but then hung up on my after 5 minutes, and absolutely no way to get in contact with anyone in support (even after opening a support ticket), I'm opening this to the forum.

I do not have any firewall set up under Security. All the terminal commands regarding the prl_disp_service that have been listed in other posts for different errors do not work.

    Thanks,
    Craig

These commands were provided to diagnose the problem, not to resolve it...

    please post here the output

    1) "sudo ls -al /Libraries/LaunchDaemons"

    2) "sudo launchctl | grep parallels"

    3) When Parallels Desktop displays an error message about faulting to connect to dispatcher, it suggests to send a problem report. Please send it. Then post here its number.

    Terminal Results from disp error

    1) "sudo ls -al /Libraries/LaunchDaemons"
Result is "No such file or directory"

    2) "sudo launchctl | grep parallels"
Nothing happens when I type that in and press return. Nothing at all. I've tried several times, relaunching, etc.

    Thanks,
    Craig

I've Installed today snow leopard on my mac.
I had previously leopard (10.5) running on my mac with parallels desktop 4 and severals virtuals machines configured.

So I had exactly the same problem has explained in that post, I've run comand in terminal application and I have the folowing results :

    1 : sudo ls -al /Libraries/LaunchDaemons
answer : No such file or directory

    2 : sudo launchctl | grep parallels
    answer : absolutly no answers

    3 : repport error
answer : nothing append when I click on the repport button.

If you can help, I'll be glad !

    Thank's.

Craig, were there some results for sending a problem report? It should reply with the number of report

So many thank's for your support.

Might It be ChMod problem ?

to the first comand : sudo ls -al /Library/LaunchDaemons
    answer :

to the second : sudo launchctl list | grep parallels
answer : comand done, back to terminal inital focus.
however the problem is still there when I try to open Parallels Desktop.

the report button is shutting off the application without report step.

Yes, it might be chmod problem.. Permissions should be -rw-r--r-- (only root is able to read the file),
I'm not sure whether RepairPermission will fix this, so it is better to open /Application/UtilitiesTerminal and execute next commands

    1) sudo chmod 644 /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon.plist

    2) sudo chown root:wheel /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon.plist

    3) sudo launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon.plist

    4) sudo launchctl start com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon

If this won't help, I will need to see the file /Library/Logs/parallels.log. Please create a support ticket at http://www.parallels.com/support/desktop/request/ and attach this file to the ticket

Somehow permissions for ParallelsDesktop were corrupted. Please uninstall it completely (it is not required to remove settings while uninstall) and then install it again. Uninstall-option is provided in the Parallels Desktop dmg package

    Hi,
please start the terminal (see posts above) and execute in it next two commands

    ls -al "/Library/Parallels/Parallels Service.app/Contents/Resources/ParallelsDispatcherService"
    sudo launchctl start com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon

and post here its output. Then try to start the Parallels Desktop again and post one more problem report

    Same problem, different cause

I have the same problem, relating to prl_disp_service not running.

The problem began occurring when I had to reinstall OS X. All of my other third party software appears to run fine except for parallels and a couple other apps that have startup items in /Library/StartupItems. When I start my mac I get informational dialogs saying that each of these items (including Parallels Desktop) could not be started b/c of "insecure" settings.

So I followed the instructions in this thread. In particular, after verifying that the ParallelsDispatcherService had the wrong permissions (readable by more than just root), I ran:
    sudo chmod 644 /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon.plist
I did not run the chown command b/c the owner was fine.
After this, I could launch parallels, but when I tried to start a virtual machine, it immediately complained that it could not load the parallels driver or start the virtual machine.

So I tried to follow the uninstall/reinstall advice. However, when I ran "uninstall" it complained that Parallels was not installed.
I seem to be able to run install, but I am afraid to because I am concerned that it will overwrite my current parallels settings and/or blow away my current virtual machine contents since it does not recognize that parallels has ever been installed.

    How should I proceed?

    Thanks,
    Frank

Likely it is because permissions of drivers were changed.

No, it should not overwrite anything, installer doesn't do this. Just proceed with install.

    Hmm, reinstall didn't work

    Hi Elric,

I followed your advice and reinstalled. The install appeared to proceed just fine. There were not notifications of any errors. I rebooted.
When I attempt to launch parallels, it starts to open and then immediately quits with no message.

However, at other times I am getting a notification from OS X in a warning dialog:
    System extension cannot be used
The system extension "/Library/Parallels/Parallels Service.app/Contents/Kets/10.6/prl_hypervisor.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling ti, or contact the product's vendor for an update.

I attempted an uninstall and reinstall. Once again, uninstall complained that Parallels was not installed even though I had just run the installer (and rebooted). Reinstalling a second time made no difference. I still see the symptoms I just described.

Are there some files I should delete b/f attempting a reinstall? I'm tempted to delete the Library/Parallels directory. Is that a good idea?

    Thanks,
    Frank

    Hi,
It's ok to delete /Library/Parallels - all configuration files live in other locations

    Installer still not the solution

    Hi Elric,
I deleted /Library/Parallels and reinstalled. Results were the same.

So I went through /Library/ and deleted everything that I could find that I knew was Parallels related. This included:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.parallels.desktop.launch.plist
    /Library/LaunchDemons/com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon.plist
    /Library/Parallels/
    /Library/StartupItems/ParallelDesktopTransporter/

Then I reinstalled. Results were the same.
Is there something else that I should be deleted that I'm missing?

One final thing. In /Applications/Parallels/ are several apps. Launching Parallels Desktop does nothing other than give a momentary blink. But if I attempt to launch Parallels Explorer, Parallels Image Tool, or Parallels Transporter, I'm confronted with the dialog message: "Unable to load Parallels SDK library. Invalid version of library was found."
I can't even find the SDK library. Where does it reside? Should I delete it and then reinstall?

    Thanks,
    Frank

It is strange, but seems that feature of Mac OS called "relocation" have made its work.. the feature is that if someone moves original application to some other place, Mac OS remembers this and if some nasty option in the ApplicationInstaller is set, install will be made to the new location instead the original one.

It would be interesting to start the /Application/Utilities/Console and search the installer.log for the word "diverting".

I don't know the solution for this at the moment, but I'll try to contact the proper team. May be deleting the destination directory to which diverting occurs will help. Or there is an utility that may help (it is shareware, but they have demo-version) - cocktail. I've read an info in the net that cleanup of system caches using this utility may help.
