I recently installed Parallels Desktop 5 on a MacBook Pro and then added Windows XP Pro SP3. I need to share data that resides on a remote system at \\remote\c\Desktop and Settings\user\Application Data. The folder on the remote is shared and I can access it from the Mac OS. When I view the remote system using Windows Explorer under Parallels Desktop, the Application Data folder is not visible. I disable the Parallels Firewall but that did not help. How to I get Parallels Desktop 5 and/or Windows XP Pro to see this folder? John
Are you able to ping the remote system from a cmd window in the virtual machine? Are you using shared or bridged networking? Try bridged networking.
Hi Joe, I can see this directory from other Windows system and a Linux box. I can also see it using Finder on this same MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.4. I can also copy the files I am interested in from the remote system to the MacBook Pro using the Finder window. One of the reasons I installed PD5 and Windows was to use a Windows directory synchronization program I have (Second Copy 2000) that works very well. My first attempt was to use WINE. I got the Windows program to run but I could not figure out how to get to the remote system and that is why I decided to try PD5. I installed PD5 using all of the defaults (I am a complete novice with PD5). I was impressed with how fast Windows run. My Windows XP Pro install disk is at Service Pack 2. I had to do the updates to Service Pack 3 after the install and the entire update took only about 5 minutes, I have never seen the SP3 update run that fast on any of my Windows boxes. MacBook Pro is 17" with 8G memory and an i7 processor. Windows also boots "very fast". I just looked at the PD5 Preferences and Network Connection type is set to "Shared Networking" with DHCP enabled. I am able to Ping the remote system using Windows CMD window. Using Windows Explorer I can connect to my remote system and display all of the folders. When I open my user folder under "Documents and Settings" I see most of my folders. However, the "Application Data" folder does not appear. My guess is something is trying to prevent me from doing something stupid with the contents of this folder. I just have not been able to determine what is doing this and how to turn it off. I disabled Parallels Internet Security and that did not help, so I enabled it again. I am really impressed with how well PD5 works and I would sure like to resolve this issue. Let me know if you need any other information. Thanks for taking the time to reply, John
Application Data is normally an invisible folder. Other invisible files in the user folder are ntuser.ini, Cookies, NetHood, SendTo, PrivacIE, IECompatCache, IETIdCache, Local Settings, UserData, Templates, PrintHood. Windows honours the invisible flag but Mac OS X smb does not. Try one of the following: 1) Append \Application Data to the user folder path to go inside the Application Data folder. 2) Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Show hidden files and folders. 3) Deselect the Hidden option for Application Data on the remote computer.
Thank you very much! Boy do I feel dumb. I had set Explorer to display hidden files when I did the initial install (I always do this). I latter found that I could not do any Windows updates because a CAB file could not be found during the install. Instead of trying to fix it, I just deleted the VM and started all over again. This machine is so fast, that was the quickest option. I FORGOT to change the Windows Explorer settings after the reinstall. Files were copied successfully as I type this. My main goal here was to copy my Thunderbird Mail directory. I run Thunderbird on several of my PCs and on my Mac (the Mac OS X version) - never at the same time. I always shut down Thunderbird when I am done and then sync the mail directory to the last machine used before attempting to run Thunderbird on a different machine. I do this so I can archive all of my mail locally and still be able to view mail even if the Internet is down. Thanks again for taking the time to help.
