How to reduce size of PVM file

Hi,
I have Parallels 8 with Win 8 installed.
For some testing purposes I installed a preview of office 2013. At that moment the size of this VM was 39GB in Finder.
Finally I removed office 2013 and all related files. Furthermore I did a cleanup in Win 8 so my C drive indicates 24GB of used space.
Unfortunately the size of my PVM file stayed at 39GB. I would have expected that this filesize would have reduced too.
Is there any way to reduce the size of the PVM file? Where are the 15GB (39 - 24)??

Hi Ben

To reclaim hard drive space Select your vm (don't start it)
use Parallels menu Virtual Machine
click on Configure
select General
from here you can reclaim HardDrive space by Selecting Reclaim... it will also list the amount of reclaimable space.

I hope you won´t mind if I also interject here, because I have the same problem as Ben.
Only in my case, I am running Windows 7 using Parallels 8 on a MacBook Pro running OSX Mountain Lion.

I also have this size discrepancy, the PVM size is 92GB (as I used to take a lot of progs on the VM when I first installed it), but now (after uninstalling quite a few), Windows only measure around 60GB.
Been trying to reduce the size of the PVM file, but the method quoted by Kat does not seem to work, as Parallels indicates that there is *no* space that can be reclaimed.

Tried to read through as many forum posts as possible (both here as elsewhere), but it looks like I am stuck... :-(

Any ideas on how to reduce the size of the PVM file (or if it can be reduced at all)?

I´d appreciate any help & offer my apologies for interjecting in this thread.

Hi Petros,
Are you really sure that Windows is only using 60GB?
Is the Recycle Bin empty? I also did a disk cleanup (cfr properties dialog of C drive, 'disk cleanup' button).

I'm a newbie with a similar situation: late 2012 iMac, OS X 10.8.4, Parallels 8, and a Windows7 VM. The VM is configured as expanding disk, 64.0 GB, split.

I am starting to develop in the VM. I sized the VM hard disk at 64 GB to accommodate the guest OS and some development environment resources (MS Visual Studio 2012, boost libraries, and run-time file expansions created by the debugger database). To my surprise, the PVM has outgrown the 64 GB limit (the finder shows a size of 61.83 GB), and I can't start it. When I try, I get the error "Unable to resize the last volume. The file system on that volume might be corrupted or not supported."

Since I cannot start the VM, it is not possible to check the hard disk for errors per KB 115549. Parallels functions for configuring the VM do not resize the PVM when 'Resize file system' is unchecked while attempting to resize per KB 113653. Finally, the instructions in KB 113840 provide no remedy.

Do I have no choice but to delete the PVM and start over?

Hi there,

Try to follow these steps:
1. Backup your VM: http://kb.parallels.com/en/8829
2. Uncheck Split Disks in VM config
3. Delete the snapshots: http://kb.parallels.com/en/5691
3. Try to start the VM

If it doesn't help, run Chkdsk from Windows CD (like as if you did it for a PC)

My results:

Copied to $USER desktop. Operation completed with no errors.
2. Uncheck Split Disks in VM config
Unchecked split. Left resize and expanding checked (as before). Reset size to 128.0 GB.
Applied the settings. Operation reported an error: "specified size exceeds the FAT32 size limit."
3. Delete the snapshots: http://kb.parallels.com/en/5691
There were no snapshots to delete.
3. Try to start the VM
Same error as before.

It appears as if I initially specified too small a VM size for my intended purpose. I now assume the most effective fix is to uninstall Parallels, delete the Parallels partition, and start over.
