Upgrade XP to Win 8 - "Standard PC" Not Compatible?

Hi:-

Just trying to upgrade Windows XP Professional SP3 to Windows 8, in a Macbook Air 2012 (2.0Ghz i8, 8GB RAM)

I am getting the following error:

This device isn't compatible in Windows 8. Contact the manufacturer for more info.
Standard PC
(Standard computers)

Anyone have any idea how to resolve this?

I solved this problem by installing the Windows 8 Upgrade over a Windows 8 Preview Install...

The original Windows XP disk image was made using Parallels 3, so it's possible that the hardware profile was too basic?
 
It looks more like a Microsoft issue - even if your VM was originally created in Parallels Desktop 3 and you then upgraded it to version 7 or 8, it could not conflict with guest OS upgrade.

I'm having the same issue

Trying to upgrade from Windows XP with store bought Windows 8 Pro disk. I do not get this error if I do a clean install of Windows 8, BUT it will not recognize the product key to activate Windows 8... Frustrating. The product key IS recognized during the upgrade process, but gets stuck at this point in the setup.

I'm getting the same problem on my MacBook Pro... and don't have a preview to install on top of... Next stop Microsoft Support...
 
Is this a Microsoft issue or a Parallels issue? I've purchased Parallels 8 and Windows 8 and I'm unable to install them. My Win8 is an upgrade from Windows XP previously in a Virtual PC environment.
 
I've got the same problem, using Parallels 8 latest build 8.0.18354 823166 and WinXP SP3, trying to run the Windows 8 Upgrade installer from the microsoft site...

Has anybody found a solution? I don't have a preview of Win8 at hand...

Let me try to help guys. While attempting to upgrade, when you see this error message next time, please hit Help (top Mac menu bar) > Report a Problem. Post your IDs here.
 
galen_rhodes, I think you do not have any chances to update your XP to Win8.
Sorry.
It's very very hard to do that.
I think the reason for this is that your VM is non ACPI compliant.
As I remember all VMs from PD3 except Vista was non ACPI.
I.e. ACPI support is not reported for that VM, so there is non ACPI windows kernel installed. If you able to switch windows kernel to ACPI one, it can be possible to update to Windows 8. But again this action is more difficult then reinstalling windows XP VM in PD8 and Windows XP will lose it's activation.
Don't waste a time, just install the new VM and access your data by connecting original virtual HDD drive to that new VM as a second disk. Only Windows Vista VMs are ACPI compliant on PD3.
