Several problems / questions for the patient

Thanks for reading and for any advice. Parallels was trouble-free until Yosemite, now some issues.

1. On installing Yosemite I got a warning that Parallels was incompatible with it, even though I had paid to upgrade quite recently. It seemed to work anyway, and I've since done one other Parallels upgrade - free - but my Mac disk still includes Parallels in an "Incompatible Software" directory. Can I just delete it?

2. Yesterday I tried to run Windows and Parallels informed me that the VM had been moved or deleted. Not by me! The only thing I can suspect is that I recently acquired software from the Mac App Store called "Privacy Scan" which deletes various types of files, maybe including something critical to Parallels? If not, all else is the same on my system and I'm not careless, how could the sudden disappearance occur?

3. Without thinking enough I told Parallels to create a new VM. Ouch! Hours of installing Windows and Office and their updates again have just been completed! Could I have taken other actions to recover the VM? (Links to articles would be great, thanks.)

4. My Windows 7.pvm is 29.2 Gb in size for JUST Windows 7 and the four main Office apps, nothing else. I don't think it was that big before, and I believe my disk free space has shrunk quite a bit. If I'm correct in guessing that much of the first VM may be still living there, can I clean it out?

It would be nice to avoid going through this again, and would be nice to recover ~15Gb of disk space if I can. Please help if you have any ideas about what went wrong and how to avoid it repeating. Thanks.

 

You haven't even said the version of Parallels you were and are running now.

 

Sorry. Currently on 10.1.1. Prior to that paid upgrade to 10 from 9.

Installation of Yosemite over purchased 10.0 said "not compatible". Soon after, free upgraded to 10.1.1, seemed to work fine but app remained in "Incompatible software" folder.
Then suddenly, Parallels couldn't find VM, and upon creating a new one space occupied grew to nearly 30Gb.

 

Parallels Desktop 9, the latest version of it, is actually compatible with Yosemite. What I would have done would be to delete the .app from the incompatible software folder (does not affect your VMs), download the latest version of 9 from the website, install it.

 

I'm using Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac, a paid update. I have version 10.1.1 (28614) which was a subsequent free maintenance update to version 10. The "Check for Updates" button says this is the latest version.

Re: incompatibility, I was already using version 10 when I installed Yosemite. The Yosemite installation warned that Parallels was incompatible, and that it would be put in the "Incompatible Software" folder. After the Yosemite install Parallels seemed to work OK, and continued to do so after the maintenance update of Parallels to 10.1.1 some days/weeks later, but the app file remains in that Incompatible Software folder.

After working for a while as 10.1.1 Parallels suddenly couldn't find the VM, I created a new one and reinstalled Win7/Office, and the disk space used pretty much doubled. Is there a way to view the contents of the .PVM file and delete the original VM?

Is there a log that might show what caused Parallels to think that the original VM had been moved or deleted? The .PVM file was still there... what was it that Parallels could not find?

Thanks for any ideas. Does Parallels official support monitor this forum?
